Amazon Unveils 5 New Alexa Echo Devices for Smart Homes
Amazon unveils five new Alexa devices led by the 16-inch Echo Show 16, with a camera-equipped Echo Studio, a sleep-sensing Echo Time clock and a photo frame.
Amazon has unveiled five new Alexa-powered devices, pushing its latest voice assistant deeper into the home. Announced on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the lineup covers smart speakers, a smart display, a bedside clock and a digital photo frame. The launch comes as Amazon faces growing competition in the smart home from Apple, which launched its own HomeView smart display earlier this month, and from AI companies with hardware plans of their own.
Echo Show 16 leads the lineup
The headline device is the redesigned Echo Show 16, a smart display with a 16-inch high-definition screen and built-in Fire TV for streaming. Amazon says it offers 20 percent more processing power than its predecessor, while the display is nearly 40 percent thinner with 10 percent more viewing area. A new Nanomatte option is claimed to cut glare by more than 90 percent while keeping image detail sharp. The display can work as a family organiser with colour-coded calendars, chores and meal plans, a digital photo frame, or a smart home dashboard. It also introduces Alexa Home Map, which shows connected devices such as lights, locks, thermostats and cameras in their locations around the home. Amazon says it has its best camera yet on an Echo Show device, with a wide field of view, auto-framing to keep people in view, and night vision for checking Live View after dark. The Echo Show 16 is available for pre-order from $499.99, with the Nanomatte version at $569.99.
A speaker that can see, a clock that tracks sleep
The new Echo Studio variant adds a Home Camera to Amazon's premium smart speaker, which keeps its high-excursion woofer and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. The camera lets Alexa understand more of the room: users can show it a board game box to get an explanation of the rules, or point it at a cereal box to help reorder the product. The Alexa app also lets users check in on the room while they are away from home. The Echo Studio with Home Camera costs $249.99, while the standard Echo Studio is $219.99. The next-generation Echo Dot, priced at $99.99, adds a built-in smart home hub for the first time, so Alexa can connect to thousands of compatible lights, locks and thermostats without a separate hub. It also includes a built-in eero Wi-Fi extender that Amazon says can add up to 1,000 square feet of coverage to an existing network. It runs on Amazon's custom AZ3 chip with an AI Accelerator for on-device AI processing, and the company claims 50 percent more bass than its predecessor. The Echo Time is a $199.99 bedside smart clock with a camera-free design and hundreds of clock faces. Its sleep-sensing technology, powered by Omnisense, can detect when a user is in a lighter stage of sleep and adjust the wake-up time to a window between 10 and 60 minutes around the scheduled alarm. As the alarm approaches, the display gradually brightens to simulate a sunrise. A Kids edition costs $209.99 and includes a year of Amazon Kids+.
A photo frame that finds the right picture
The Alexa Photo Frame combines a traditional digital photo frame with Amazon's voice assistant. It has a 10-inch anti-glare touchscreen and syncs pictures automatically from Amazon Photos, so new images appear as they are added. Alexa can surface relevant pictures, such as photos of people smiling or images suited to a particular season, while filtering out screenshots and other clutter. Users can also ask Alexa to display photos of a particular person, pet or trip, or browse images directly on the touchscreen. The frame starts at $199.99.
Why it matters
Amazon's lineup shows where the smart home battle is heading: the speaker is no longer just a speaker. With cameras, sleep sensing, home maps and on-device AI, each device is becoming a hub that watches, organises and manages the home around it. The Echo Dot, Echo Studio, Echo Time and Alexa Photo Frame went on sale from launch day, while the Echo Show 16 is on pre-order with shipping slated for later this year. How buyers respond will show whether people want their assistant to see and sense more of their home, or whether that extra awareness is a step too far.
