Apple Rolls Out iOS 27.2 With Smarter Siri AI

Apple has released iOS 27.2 with a smarter Siri AI that remembers past chats, five new languages, SynthID image checks and fixes for over 160 security flaws.

Apple has released iOS 27.2, a major update for iPhones that gives its Siri AI assistant a memory, adds five new languages and fixes more than 160 security vulnerabilities. The update was released on October 26 in the United States and is rolling out to users around the world on October 27, alongside iPadOS 27.2. It is the first big follow-up to iOS 27, and its headline change is Siri AI. After an English-language beta, the assistant can now hold on to the thread of a conversation and use more of what is on your phone to give useful answers.

Siri AI can now remember past conversations

The biggest change is that Siri AI can now recall past conversations. You can ask it about something it told you before, such as the restaurants it recommended last week, and it can pick up where the conversation left off. It can also give more contextually accurate answers by drawing on more sources than before. Those sources include photos attached in Messages, Calendar event attendees, voicemails, and better results from Safari history and Reading List. In practice, that means Siri AI can find information spread across your apps. For example, it can search your messages for a suggestion, pull a recipe from an email and add the ingredients to a shopping list in Reminders. Conversation history is kept in a dedicated Siri app so it can be picked up across devices such as iPhone, iPad and Mac. Users also get a new Excluded Apps control, which lets them limit which apps Siri and Search can access. That matters because a more personal assistant needs clearer boundaries, and Apple is letting users set them in one place.

Five new languages, with more on the way

Siri AI is now available in five more languages: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Apple said it rolled out Siri AI first in English and planned to add these five languages in October. There are two exceptions to note. Siri AI is not available in the European Union or mainland China. Apple plans to add more languages by the end of the year, including Chinese (traditional), Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese. Not every iPhone that can install iOS 27.2 can use Siri AI. The assistant needs newer hardware: iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models and later, including iPhone Air and the foldable iPhone Duo. Owners of an iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus can install the update, but those two models cannot use Siri AI.

Security fixes and SynthID image checks

Security is the other major reason to update. The release fixes more than 160 security vulnerabilities across Apple's platforms, including Bluetooth issues and privacy preference bypass problems. The update also adds SynthID watermarking in Photos and Image Playground. SynthID helps identify whether an image was generated or modified with generative AI tools, so users can tell AI-made images apart from real photos more easily.

What else is new in iOS 27.2

Beyond Siri AI and security, the update brings a set of smaller changes across Apple's apps: - Messages gains Suggested Actions, and Shared Albums in Photos can now edit captions and comments, avoid adding duplicate photos and remind users before albums expire. - The Apple TV app gets Simple Profiles, and its Multiview feature can now show up to four live sports streams at once. - FaceTime's Dual Capture feature now works for group calls on recent iPhones. - Apple Music gets a redesigned black-and-white app icon, and the Podcasts app splits its Home tab into New Episodes and Continue Playing. - The iPhone Duo gains support for the Apple Pencil with USB-C, and the Home app gets new smart home controls.

How to update, and what to check first

To install the update, go to Settings, then General, then Software Update on a supported iPhone. Because the download can be large, it is worth updating over Wi-Fi with the phone charged or plugged in. Before you update, check two things. First, make sure your model supports Siri AI if that feature is the reason you are updating, since older models will get the update without it. Second, check the new Excluded Apps control if you want to limit what Siri and Search can see. iOS 27.2 is a practical update rather than a flashy one: a more useful assistant, support for more languages, and a long list of security fixes. For most iPhone owners, that combination makes it worth installing soon.
