Apple Unveils M6 MacBook Pro and iMac for AI Era
Apple unveils a 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac powered by its new M6 chip, with faster on-device AI, up to 24 hours of battery life, and prices from 1,499 dollars
Apple has unveiled a new 14-inch MacBook Pro and a new iMac, both powered by its latest in-house chip, the M6. The launch puts faster on-device artificial intelligence at the centre of Apple's Mac line-up, so AI tasks can run directly on the computer instead of in the cloud.
What Apple announced
The two machines arrive together. The 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at 1,999 dollars, while the new iMac starts at 1,499 dollars. Customers can pre-order both from Wednesday, October 28, in 35 countries and regions, including the United States. General availability begins on Friday, November 6. Apple says the M6 MacBook Pro delivers up to 30 percent faster graphics and up to 25 percent faster AI performance than its M5 predecessor. It also offers up to 24 hours of battery life, which Apple calls the longest ever in a Mac. The new iMac delivers up to 5 times faster on-device AI performance than the previous M4 model, according to Apple. The 24-inch machine pairs the M6 chip with a 4.5K Retina display, Wi-Fi 7, and up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports on higher tiers.
Why on-device AI matters
Running AI tasks on the device itself, rather than sending data to a server, can mean faster responses and stronger privacy, since personal data does not need to leave the machine. Apple's pitch is that the M6's Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators in each core make everyday apps, photo and video editing, and AI features across macOS run smoothly without a constant cloud connection. The launch also lands one day before Apple's "Pro and tell" event in Los Angeles on October 28, which Bloomberg News has reported is expected to feature Apple's first touch-screen MacBook Pro. That timing suggests the M6 launch is only the first step in a wider Mac refresh.
What buyers should know
There is no M6 Pro or M6 Max chip in this round, and no new 16-inch model yet, as Apple staggers the rollout. Both new machines also start above their predecessors' original launch prices, so buyers should compare the entry configurations carefully before pre-ordering. Still, for anyone upgrading from an older Intel-based Mac, Apple says the leap is far larger, with up to 18 times faster performance than the most popular Intel-based iMac.
