Apple Adds OpenAI AI Assistants to Pages, Keynote, Numbers

Apple adds OpenAI-powered AI assistants to Pages, Keynote and Numbers in its free November Creator Studio update, plus MCP support for outside AI agents.

Apple has announced a major update to Apple Creator Studio, its collection of creative apps for Mac, iPad and iPhone. The headline change for everyday users is in the productivity apps: Keynote, Pages and Numbers are getting intelligent assistants built on Apple models and OpenAI, designed to work with the document already open on screen. The update arrives on the App Store in November as a free update for existing subscribers.

What the assistants actually do

Each assistant understands document context, so it works with the file you are already editing instead of starting from a blank prompt. In Keynote, it helps design, animate and refine slides. In Pages, it drafts, restructures and fine-tunes written content. In Numbers, it calculates, visualizes and organizes data, recommends suitable chart types with a one-tap preview, and builds custom tables using world knowledge. The same update brings an intelligent assistant in beta to Logic Pro for Mac, which helps start a new song, set up a vocal track from a single prompt, or refine an active project. Pixelmator Pro gains Generate Fill, which lets creators circle an area in an image and describe the change they want, with the edit matched to the lighting, perspective and texture around it. Final Cut Pro for Mac now includes built-in MotionVFX content, with thousands of effects, templates, titles and transitions, and the Content Hub now includes video assets.

The bigger shift: outside AI agents can work in the apps

The update also adds Model Context Protocol (MCP) support to Keynote, Pages and Numbers. MCP is an open standard that lets external AI agents and tools read content, perform edits and run automated actions directly in the apps, instead of only working through copy and paste or exports. That matters because it opens Apple's document apps to AI tools from other companies. Keynote also gains support for Keynote Interchange Format (.keyx), an open JSON-based bundle format designed to be readable by external tools, developer workflows and AI agents. Together, the two changes turn Pages, Keynote and Numbers from closed apps into workspaces that outside agents can actually work inside.

Who can use it, and what it costs

There are limits at launch. The assistants are in beta and available in U.S. English only. The Keynote, Pages and Numbers assistants require an Apple Intelligence-capable device running iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 or later. The Logic Pro assistant is Mac-only and needs macOS 27 Golden Gate or later on an Apple Intelligence-capable Mac. MCP support in Keynote, Pages and Numbers is also Mac-only, requiring macOS 27 or later. The Creator Studio update is free for existing subscribers. New subscribers pay 12.99 dollars per month or 129 dollars per year in the US, with a one-month free trial, and students and educators pay 2.99 dollars per month or 29.99 dollars per year. One-time-purchase versions of Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage will also receive the new features in November. Free versions of Keynote, Pages, Numbers and Freeform continue to be available with every new iPhone, Mac and iPad.

Why it matters

Apple has often preferred to build its own AI features in-house. Here it is doing both: using OpenAI models alongside its own, and opening its productivity apps to outside agents through a shared protocol. For users, the practical result is simple: help that understands the document in front of you, and AI tools that can work in that document rather than beside it. The test will be whether the beta assistants feel reliable enough in real documents, and how quickly Apple widens them beyond U.S. English and newer devices.
