Apple Overtakes Nvidia as World's Most Valuable Company

Apple reclaimed the world's most valuable company title again on October 30, passing Nvidia at $5.03 trillion as AI spending worries shook tech stocks.

Apple is the world's most valuable company again. The iPhone maker reclaimed the title on Friday, October 30, 2026, passing Nvidia as investors looked for safety amid growing worries about artificial intelligence spending. Apple did not win the crown by rallying. It won it by falling less than everyone else.

What happened on Friday

Apple shares fell 1.2% on Friday, leaving the company with a market value of $5.03 trillion. Nvidia sank 4.2% to close at $4.93 trillion. It is the first time Apple has overtaken Nvidia since briefly doing so in late July. The swap happened during a broad sell-off in technology stocks. A string of disappointing results from major tech companies, including Intel and Amazon, followed similarly weak reports from Alphabet and Meta earlier in the week. Each report renewed the same fear: that the huge sums being poured into AI computing infrastructure will not pay off soon enough. Intel had the worst day of all, plunging 28.6% on Friday after a weak profit outlook. The chipmaker lost more than 45% of its value across October, its biggest ever one-month drop in Bloomberg data going back more than 40 years. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index fell 6.7% in October, its worst month since March 2025, while data center firms CoreWeave and Nebius dropped more than 30% each during the month.

Why investors picked Apple

Apple has largely stayed out of the AI spending race, and that restraint is now its biggest advantage. While rivals have committed hundreds of billions of dollars to data centers and chips, Apple has kept a lid on capital spending. That has left its cash flow in far better shape. Apple's shares are up 27% in 2026, by far the best performance among the Magnificent Seven tech giants and more than twice the gain of second-place Nvidia. The company is projected to see its free cash flow climb 38% to $142 billion in fiscal 2026, which ended on September 30. The contrast with its rivals is sharp. Alphabet and Amazon have seen their free cash flow turn negative as AI outlays ballooned, forcing them to turn increasingly to debt markets for funding just as rising interest rates push up borrowing costs. Investors, nervous about that debt, have started treating Apple as the safer place to wait out the storm.

What to watch next

The crown has changed hands before, and it could change hands again quickly. Market values move every session, and Nvidia remains the central supplier of the AI boom, so a strong Nvidia report could flip the ranking back. The next test comes fast. Apple reports its quarterly earnings on Monday, November 2, and investors will watch for signs of holiday demand after its recent iPhone and Mac launches. Nvidia, the AI bellwether, reports later in November. Both results will help decide whether Apple's return to the top is a lasting shift or just a pause in a volatile market. For now, though, the message from the market is clear. After years of rewarding the biggest AI spenders, investors are starting to reward the company that spent the least.
