Anthropic Launches Claude Duet, Proactive AI Agent App
Anthropic launched Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent app on Opus 5.5 that watches connected apps, sends daily briefings and works while your devices are off.
Anthropic has unveiled Claude Duet, a standalone AI agent app that acts as a proactive assistant for professionals and small business owners. Unlike a chatbot that waits for you to ask, Duet reaches out first - sending a morning brief, checking your connected apps every few hours and alerting you when something needs attention.
What happened
Anthropic introduced Claude Duet on Wednesday, October 21, as a research preview available through a waitlist. It is initially limited to Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, and can be used on the web or through a standalone Duet iOS app. The app is built around Anthropic's Opus 5.5 model and plugs into more than 6,000 connectors in the Claude Marketplace, including Gmail and Slack. It runs on its own cloud virtual machine with its own browser, so it keeps working even when your laptop or phone is switched off. Interactions happen in one ongoing thread instead of across different conversations. Duet handles work like scheduling meetings, following up on invoices, building financial forecasts and creating web apps. It can even buy business supplies for you, paying through Stripe's Link digital wallet with a virtual card or through Shopify's Shop Pay.
Why it matters
Duet is Anthropic's answer to the new wave of proactive agents. OpenAI launched its always-on "dots" agents last month, and Meta's Muse agent drew millions of downloads and pushed investor interest in autonomous AI services. The race is no longer about who has the smartest chatbot - it is about who controls the agent that runs your workday. Anthropic says it designed Duet around judgment: deciding what needs you, what can wait and when to check first. The company claims Duet requires user approval before sensitive actions like sending a message, making a payment, signing a document or deleting a file, and says the agent cannot see your passwords or logins.
What to watch
Anthropic is upfront about the limits. The lab says Duet can misjudge urgency, misread emails and struggle with personal tasks like booking tickets. Background checks count toward your existing Claude plan limits, so heavy use could eat into your allowance. Whether proactive agents become trusted coworkers or noisy distractions will decide this race. With waitlisted US access only, most users will be watching from the sidelines for now.
