iPhone Duo Launch Faces Severe Stock Shortage
Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, launches Oct 23 with limited walk-in stock, a $1,999 starting price, and delivery dates slipping into 2027.
Apple has confirmed that its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, will be available only in limited quantities for walk-in customers when it launches on Friday, October 23, 2026. The company shared the news in a statement with MacRumors, just two days before launch day. New delivery estimates have already slipped into 2027, making the Duo one of Apple's hardest-to-buy products in years.
Apple confirms limited walk-in stock
In the statement, an Apple spokesperson said Apple Stores will have limited iPhone Duo availability for customers who arrive without a reservation, while the company keeps working to get the device into buyers' hands as quickly as possible. The confirmation ends days of uncertainty around launch-day inventory. Earlier reports said Apple Store employees had been asked to discourage customers from visiting stores on launch day without a pre-order. Apple's wording makes clear that at least some walk-in purchases will be possible, but supply will be tight. Buyers should not expect to walk in on launch morning and pick any color or storage size they want. In Japan, Apple has gone further: iPhone Duo purchases at its retail stores will temporarily require a reservation, with no walk-in sales at all for a limited period.
Extraordinary demand meets supply problems
The shortage follows an unusually intense pre-order period. Apple has described iPhone Duo demand as "nothing short of extraordinary" after delivery estimates for new orders slipped into 2027. The company has also limited U.S. purchases to two iPhone Duo devices per customer. Pre-orders opened on October 16, and many customers struggled to place an order at all. Reports say Apple's manufacturing partners are having trouble meeting the company's quality standards, which slowed production. In India, pre-orders placed on October 19 already carry an estimated shipping date of January 23, 2027.
Price, colors, and storage options
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States and £1,999 in the UK, putting it at the same price as Apple's latest 14-inch MacBook Pro. It comes in two colors, star white and night sky, with storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Apple says availability begins Friday, October 23.
