OpenAI Models Arrive on Google Cloud for Enterprise

OpenAI will sell its top AI models and Codex agent through Google Cloud in the coming weeks, letting firms now buy via Marketplace spending commitments.

Two AI rivals are teaming up. OpenAI will make its top artificial intelligence models and its Codex coding agent available through Google Cloud in the coming weeks, the companies said on Wednesday. It is a big step in OpenAI's push to sell its models to more business customers.

The Deal

Under the agreement, OpenAI's latest models, such as GPT-6 Astra, will appear in Google Cloud's Model Garden. Customers will be able to buy them through the Google Cloud Marketplace and pay using their existing cloud spending commitments, according to a company blog post. The deal also puts OpenAI's models inside Google's Antigravity development environment and Gemini Agent, Axios reported when it first broke the story. General availability is planned in the coming weeks. It will also help customers in regulated industries. They can access OpenAI models through Google Cloud's access controls, data governance tools and infrastructure to build agentic AI workflows.

Rivals Selling Together

The partnership deepens a complicated relationship. OpenAI and Google compete in core AI products and search, but the cost of building and running large models is pushing them to cooperate. Google is the latest major hyperscaler to offer OpenAI models to its customers. That became possible after OpenAI's exclusive distribution arrangement with Microsoft expired in April. OpenAI has since expanded to Amazon Web Services, and now to Google Cloud. That means its models are now sold through all three major US cloud providers, each of which is competing for AI market share. This is not the first time the two companies have worked together. Last year, Google struck a cloud deal with OpenAI to give it more computing capacity.

Why It Matters

The move shows how big cloud providers are becoming the main sales channels for top AI models. Cloud companies usually take a cut of sales made through their platforms. For OpenAI, the deal opens another route to corporate customers. Businesses can now use OpenAI models without setting up a separate relationship with the ChatGPT maker and without moving their data somewhere new. For Google, it strengthens a strategy of offering a wider choice of third-party models rather than relying only on its own Gemini models. As Mike Leone, a vice president at Moor Insights and Strategy, put it: "For Google, I read the deal as confidence, because Gemini now has to win those customers with OpenAI sitting right next to it."

What Comes Next

General availability is expected in the coming weeks. Axios said no exact date, pricing or revenue-sharing terms have been disclosed yet, so the details that matter for buyers are still to come.
