OpenAI Buys Pierre, Meta Buys Conductor in One Day
OpenAI agreed to buy Pierre Computer and Meta acquired Conductor on the same day, November 4, as both giants race to control AI coding tools for developers.
Two of the biggest names in tech made the same move on the same day. On November 4, OpenAI said it will buy Pierre Computer Company, and Meta acquired Conductor, a startup that runs teams of AI coding agents. Both deals are about one thing: who controls the tools developers use to build software with AI.
OpenAI buys the Git layer behind Codex
OpenAI announced on November 4 that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, a small developer tools startup. Pierre's tools already power parts of Codex, OpenAI's AI coding agent. Trees helps developers browse project files, Diffs shows code changes for review, and Highlights keeps syntax colours in step as code is typed or generated by an agent. Pierre's paid product, Code Storage, is a Git hosting service built for AI apps and agents. OpenAI plans to fold it into Codex. The company said it wants Codex to be "the place where developers and agents take on their most ambitious projects." Pierre's open source projects will stay open source, and existing Code Storage customers can keep using the service while OpenAI brings its features into Codex. No price was disclosed. The deal still needs regulatory approval, and the two companies will stay separate until it closes. The move follows OpenAI's own work on scaling Git. Earlier in the week, the company described Pando, an in-house source control backend built for its engineers and AI agents.
Meta buys the team behind parallel coding agents
Meta acquired Conductor, a startup founded in 2024 whose product lets developers run several AI coding agents at the same time, each in its own workspace. The news was first reported by Axios on November 4, and Meta confirmed the deal to TechCrunch. Founder and CEO Charlie Holtz announced it the same day, saying Conductor is joining Meta. Conductor does not build its own AI models. Its platform runs agents from Anthropic and OpenAI side by side, so a developer can split a project into parts and let a different agent work on each one. Holtz said he looks forward to working with Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, who leads product at Meta Superintelligence Labs. No price was disclosed. The deal comes months after Meta launched Muse Code, its own AI coding agent, in August 2026. Conductor's cloud service will shut down on November 20, and the company will then start deleting cloud user data. Its core features will keep working until early next year, and Holtz teased something new for customers in early 2027.
Two deals, one race
The two announcements landed on the same Wednesday, and they point at the same shift. Coding is moving from one developer plus one assistant to teams of agents working in parallel, and the plumbing underneath that shift is now worth buying. OpenAI bought the storage and review layer its agents already depend on. Meta bought the orchestration layer that lets many agents work at once. Neither company disclosed a price, and neither deal has closed yet. But both show that the AI coding race is now about infrastructure and workflow, not just smarter models.
What it means for developers
For developers, the short-term impact is small. Codex keeps working, Pierre's open source tools stay open, and Conductor's core features run until early next year. The bigger change is where the tools are heading. OpenAI wants the whole coding workflow, from writing a branch to shipping code, inside Codex. Meta wants its Superintelligence Labs to own the way teams of agents work together. Conductor cloud users should export their data before November 20, when the service shuts down and deletion begins.
