SpaceX Borrows $40B for GPUs, Warns Neocloud Shakeout
SpaceX borrowed $40B for GPUs arriving in early 2027, and Musk warned in a post that 200-plus neoclouds face a shakeout as lenders cut off AI-only firms.
SpaceX has closed $40 billion in debt to buy graphics processing units, Elon Musk said in a post on X on Sunday, October 25. The money is mainly callable debt, meaning SpaceX can repay it early, for GPUs arriving in the first and second quarters of 2027.
Why SpaceX could borrow when others cannot
Musk credited SpaceX's investment-grade rating and its revenue from Starlink and rocket launches. Those businesses do not depend on AI data centers, so lenders were willing to fund the chip purchase. Reuters had reported earlier in October that SpaceX was in talks with banks and asset managers to raise $40 billion for Nvidia AI chips. Musk's post did not name lenders, and Reuters noted it was not clear what "closed" meant or whether investors had agreed on pricing.
The warning for neoclouds
Neoclouds are newer companies that rent out GPU capacity for AI work. Musk said debt markets have almost entirely shut off money for any company that does not have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers. He predicted that the 200-plus neoclouds will see heavy failures and consolidation, with only a few surviving. He later added that SpaceX will not buy any neoclouds, calling it pointless. For the fourth quarter, SpaceX expects $35 billion to $40 billion in capital spending, according to Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen. That shows how large the AI build-out has become, and why lenders are now being more selective.
What is still unclear
The exact lenders, interest rate and terms were not disclosed. The post also did not say how much of the $40 billion is already drawn, only that the debt is for GPUs arriving in early 2027 and is not a major factor this quarter.
