UK Commits $800M to AI Security Funding
Britain will spend £600 million ($800 million) on AI security, including a new AI Biosecurity Lab, cyber defence upgrades and model credits from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Britain's government has set out around £600 million ($800 million) in funding largely geared towards defending against health and security threats from artificial intelligence. The plan, announced on Saturday, puts biosecurity at the top of the list. It also brings in direct support from some of the world's biggest AI companies.
Biosecurity Gets the Biggest Share
The largest chunk of the money will go to a new biosecurity initiative. This includes £100 million for a laboratory that uses AI to detect biological threats, and £65 million to develop countermeasures against pathogens. AI minister Kanishka Narayan said the aim is for the AI Biosecurity Lab to become a major global institution "bringing together world-leading scientific expertise to protect people from emerging biological threats". The funding comes just days after the government's own science advisers warned that Britain risks becoming a "high-value AI customer" rather than a country able to shape the technology, unless it acts urgently to build domestic capabilities.
Tech Giants Join In
Tech companies OpenAI and Anthropic will offer up to £200 million of model credits to the biosecurity initiative. Google DeepMind and London-based AI life sciences startup Basecamp Research will also offer other assistance, according to Reuters.
Cyber Defences and the AI Industry
Beyond biosecurity, the package spreads money across cyber defence and the AI industry: - £120 million extra for the existing AI Security Institute - £130 million for new cyber defence projects for critical infrastructure and the wider economy, called the National Cyber Shield and the National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre - £60 million for a fund that invests in British companies using AI to advance robotics, autonomous systems and manufacturing - £60 million for AI research and procurement contracts - £23 million for research on the economic impact of AI - £18 million for a new chip design academy - £15 million for a prize recognising AI solutions to public policy problems, initially focused on healthcare - £30 million for regional mayors to support local AI work Britain's National Cyber Security Centre will also receive an unspecified sum to expand its operations in Manchester.
